OUR PRACTICES

Purpose and profit are partners at Mill + Commons, and we embrace that mindset every day as we create sustainable furniture — while upholding our commitment to its high quality. And we do it all without cutting corners or resorting to costly markups.

Designed With Intention

Our catalogue is small by design to make sure each piece is perfect and built so you can dissemble it, haul it across the country and easily reassemble it.

How We Live By Our Values

We embrace this value every day as we create sustainable furniture — while upholding our commitment to its high quality. And we do it all without cutting corners or resorting to costly markups.

The Best Materials

We use exclusively sustainable materials. Our wood uses a formaldehyde-free and vegan assembly. It’s FSC certified, EPA approved and sourced all within canada. The finish we use is also certified organic, vegan and biodegradable.

Carbon Offset

Shipping is a major contributor to climate change. We work to combat that by milling locally. We also carbon offset our products from the moment they leave our warehouse to the moment you receive them.

Minimal Waste

At each stage of design and production, we ensure we’re doing our best to minimize offcuts and waste. We even use our sawdust in nearby compost schemes.

Proudly Canadian

We’re fiercely local. Design and manufacturing happen in Vancouver and we sustainably mill all our wood in Canada, helping us ensure everyone along the chain is paid fairly and treated equally.

Made to Last

Our furniture is designed to be broken down and rebuilt — many times. If something wears out or breaks, we can send you a replacement part to extend its life.

Fully Circular

The wood and finish from our tables are compostable. Because we don’t use harsh chemicals, when a pieces long life comes to an end, it can be broken down and returned to the earth (unless you’ve passed it on to another home).

The Local Impact of your Purchase

The impact of your purchase is felt far beyond just Mill and Commons. You are supporting several industries and hundreds of Canadian workers.

The Hidden Cost of Online Shopping

Most negative environmental impact happens before you even order. It's a major contributor to climate change. We work to combat that by milling, designing, and manufacturing locally. Our furniture travels on average x12 less than other online only retailers.

1. Designed in Vancouver

We work exclusively with local designers in the west coast of Canada.

2. Milled in Canada

Our white oak comes directly from sustainably forested regions in Canada specifically grown to be harvested. We want to protect rare old-growth forest in Canada.

3. Manufactured in Vancouver

Our pieces are prototyped in facilities five blocks from our founder’s home. We then manufacture everything in North Vancouver.
